Hydroponics - A Real System for Real Survival

by The Urban Survivalist

It would be great if all of us had a nice piece of land that we could run off to when the SHTF, unfortunately, that's not the case. Most of us will be honkered down in an urban area and if you prepared right, you can stay there, hidden away from the angery, hungry mobs of people. But what happens when you start running low? Or maybe its just a matter of your body needing more nutrients than those "Ready to Eat Meals" are giving you. Face it, your body needs fresh food, not something that was preserved back in 1958. So, it looks like a "Road Trip" might be in your future!

There is a solution. Grow your own food. Our ancestors have done this since the dawn of time. Why can't you? Perhaps you've convinced yourself that you don't have enough land or maybe you've thought that it would be a waste once the water stops flowing. WRONG!

Those excuses are easily overcome with Hydroponics. There are several hydroponics techniques but they all allow for food to be grown faster, in a small space, and just about anywhere including basements, and even balconies. Heck, I have a system operating in my living room right now.

Tomatoes, lettuce, watercress, cucumbers, herbs, and various other edible plants all do well in a hydroponic garden. Beginning growers will be satisfied with the quality of their crops, and the rates at which they will grow. You'll be surprised at how good your vegetables taste and at the amount of vegetable from such a small space. One of the reasons is that because the nutrients are being generously supplied, the plant doesn't need to generate a large root system, instead its energies are directed towards plant growth and plant fruit.

If you find yourself in a Survival Situation, there is another benefit - concealment. I pity the farmer with 20-50 acres. He'll have hordes of people tearing up his fields, but the Hydroponic Farmer doesn't have to worry about this. Since many systems are small and require very little attention, no one will even know you have a bumper crop in the making. You'll be able to produce fresh fruits and vegetables, which means that you've extended your "survival time". [Survival Time is what I refer to when people ask me how much food they should store. I simply ask them, "how long do you want to live?"]

A Hydroponic System is more important than that case of MRE's, because it's on-going. A perpetual system of regenerating food for you and your family. Isn't it time you got your own Hydroponic System?
